This year had the opportunity to teach touch rugby to prospective physical education teachers at Middle Tennessee State University. This class was part of an invasion games content class for physical education majors. There were 18 students (sophomores and juniors) in the class as well as two teachers (myself and the primary teacher). I also recruited some upperclassmen to help out. The class met twice a week for 80 minutes and we met for a total of four unerupted weeks (8 classes). Some of the students this was the first class in the program and many were getting to know each other. To that point, this was also the last unit in the 16-week class. In past years I have used the Sport Education model to teach volleyball, soccer, & cross-fit. I originally wanted to teach a soccer sport-ed season but my advisory (the primary in the class) encouraged me to do touch rugby. While I had never taught touch rugby in any form, I am glad my advisor encouraged me to learn this sport. While I wanted the students to learn the sport of touch rugby I also wanted them to experience the Sport Education model. The students take a curriculum class that covers the Sport Education model. However, sometimes learning about theory is hard to grasp, and giving them a concrete example I thought would be helpful. I will overview what I did to implement a touch rugby Sport Education model. I will present the rationale for decisions and provide changes I would do next time. I also collected student feedback and will present some common themes they liked and didn't. I also hope this serves as a resource for feature educators. Disclaimer: Every teaching situation is different. My biggest advice is to start slow. If I didn't have physical education majors I would have made different curricular choices. Please adapt to your teaching style and your students. Learning Touch Rugby and Sport Education To learn touch rugby I consulted the following resources.
With all this information I outlined my plan for the season. I will know review how I addressed the main aspects of the Sport Education model. While I outlined how long the unit and each season were going to be I left the room to make changes. Features of Touch Rugby Sport Education

Students Responses/Reflections I asked the students to reflect back on their season. On a notecard and as a team identify one thing you would keep, one thing you would change, one thing you still have questions on. Keep
We also had a general conversation about the season. I went over how this looks like in schools and talked about different curriculum choices and asked for their feedback. Below are some of the common themes from that conversation.
Roles: In terms of what the students said I liked that there was a consensus that they liked the roles. I did talk about the value of rotating roles and have done that in other sport seasons. That might be a good way to have every student experience a role for the sake of the students learning more about the sport-ed model. Not sure If I would do that or not but I do think it is worth considering. I don't think I would have so many roles for the first time. I think I would do Coach, Captain, and Team Motivator. Opening ceremony: So I don't typically do an opening ceremony or make as big of a deal as I did for this unit. It seems like the students didn't enjoy it and I agree I might not have done it with them. IF this was the curriculum class I might go over it and show it to them but for college students, they struggled with buying into this. It could be worth doing during a second season once students know each other better and understand the model more. The judges recommended that points be awarded for how well teams presented themselves during the opening ceremony. Motivation/Affective Domain: Bonus points for whatever team mentioned the affective domain. Before this unit I felt that some student's attendance was poor; this unit felt like attendance was better by all members. Students whore their team colors fairly constantly. Students were talking bout this class outside of class "don't forget to bring our team color" or "our team poster is due tomorrow." There was a better concern about other classmates. After one team was deducted fair play points because of poor attuited and talking back to the referee a few members approached me after class. They realized how one person's action can affect the rest of their team and they took a better effort not only to be concerned about their behavior but the rest of their team. Most teams had a good festive spirit about them and would acknowledge other team's good efforts. However, some people started point garbing. early on gave bonus fair play points to teams that were exemplifying the behaviors I wanted. I think this caused some individuals to be insincere in their behavior. I think next time I would only take points away. Overall, the use of points I think was a good thing for motivation. I just wish it created a more genuine response in people. Officials, Rules, Flags: I think I would try to officiate more to model this skill. This was very hard for some of the officials; by the end of the season, they were more confident. I think we talked about having two officials on the duty team. Because I was learning the rules too, this caused some confusion in technique or rule interpretation. Now when I do my referee clinic I will know what to focus on. Also because using officials in any invasion game is harder, the more I can do to make official's job easier would be helpful. I think for that reason I would use flags. Using the Sport Ed Model To Develop Specialized Content Knowledge: Students need to know what to teach within particular content. This is things like rules, history, tactics, strategy, and is referred to as common content knowledge (CCK). They also need to know how to teach that content, which is commonly referred to as specialized content knowledge (SCK). I think this sport-ed season was good at creating CCK but not SCK. I think PE Majors need to know more about SCK than CCK. I do think of all the sports we taught in this class students have the best understanding or learned the most from this unit. I do think the coaches probably got some SCK when they were teaching their content to their teams, however, I created the plans for them they just had to implement them. I think next time I would have them develop a content map of task progressions at the end of the season. I know researchers use content maps to measure SCK; I am just not sure how many PETE faculty use them on their students. Pics and Videos

Why Use Tech?I think it was Kasey Bell who said "technology is not a solution but an opportunity". Technology is a tool, not only for me as a teacher, but for my students. I want them not just to consume tech in a positive way but create and collaborate with other students. We assume most students today are tech savvy, however, the truth is they are tech dependent. I think it is up to us as educators to teach students how to use tech in a positive way. I also come across many teachers who are afraid to use tech in their classroom for whatever reason. Fear of failure tends to keep us from trying new things. I have failed many times but I also say if you are going to fail, fail forward. Adam Llevo has a great quote that sums this up pretty nicely, "The best time to plant an oak tree is 20 years ago, the next best time is today". Now lets check out some of the tools I use (from failing forward) in my classroom: PERMANENT Display (Tv/Projector)MusicMusic is such a huge part of how I teach. I use it to for Engagement, Enhancing Lessons, and Classroom Management. Here are a few tips: 1) check the lyrics of what you use, 2) find music relevant to your students, 3) use themed music, 4) use instrumental versions, and my biggest suggestion is 5) use streaming music (I use Amazon music, which is free since I have Prime). I talked in more detail about how I use music in this post. Plickers/PlagnetsPlickers are a great low budget (free to use) cards with QR codes on them that allow your students to answer multiple choice questions. It allows for supper quick data on your students that you can use to give feedback to your students and analyze your teaching. Used for checks for understanding, exit tickets, self assessments, and setting goals. Plagnets are just plickers on a magnet. Read these articles to learn more: BAM Video DelayBAM Video Delay App that continuously showing what just happened for quick visual feedback using four quadrants to showcase the video delay. Used by sport coaches, PE teachers, professional athletes and dancers! Students love seeing themselves perform and make adjustments. RemindRemind allows teachers to send information via text, images, & voice to students and parents through any kind of device. I love the scheduling feature! It integrates with Google classroom, quizlet, quizzes, and much more. Quizlet LiveQuizlet Live is a free in-class game where students work in teams to learn study sets on Quizlet. Teams work together to correctly match the (twelve random) terms and definitions in a study set. The first team to match all of their terms and definitions wins!. This is my students favorite way to review key terms, diagrams, and practice test questions. QuizizzQuizizz allows you to conduct student-paced formative assessments in a fun and engaging way for students. It has a live and homework feature and it is totally free to use. the best feature is that there are millions of already made quizizz from other users that you can use. Google FormsGoogle Forms can be used for a wide variety of uses: assessments, provide feedback in surveys, enter fitness results, flipped lessons, and even differentiated instruction activities. Data is collected into a Google Sheet which can be used for simple analysis. One of my favorite features is providing feedback for incorrect AND correct responses. Google SlidesI use Google Slides as a teaching aid for Tabata and GIF Activities to Collaboration activities and Project Based Learning activities for students. I sometimes call Google Slides the Swiss Army Knife of G-Suite. There is so much you can do with it. Google SheetsGoogle Sheets is great for data management, I use it for my grade book and to make custom report cards, however, Sheets is great for collaboration activities with students. My favorite one I did was having all the students in ONE sheet to make a dynamic warm up for their group. I love the new Insert image feature. Students also use it to track their fitness data. Google ClassroomGoogle Classroom is not meant to be a learning management system, but I use it as my road map for all my students to get information. Not only can I make my class paperless, but this online platform helps students lead discussions, collaborate on group projects, as well as having a place to turn in assignments. It is also a great place to leave feedback. Keep conversations going even when class period ends. FlipityFlipity has SO many features I mostly use it for a random name picker and to make groups quickly. For my purposes I like Flipity over Team Shake. You can also use Flipity to make flashcards, quiz show, scavenger hunt, word search, tournament brackets, and even make certificates. Screncastify/Loom

After watching Matt Pomeroy and Charla T Krahnke SHAPENashville Presentation on Sport Education I was really interested in giving the Sport Ed Model another go. I have always liked the model and have struggled getting the buy in that I would hope from my students. After seeing Matt and Charla's presentation I was encouraged to give it another try. After reviewing Matt Pomeroy's resources on his website (check it out here), I decided to do my first season on Cross-Fit and Muscular Strength. Overall I thought unit/season went well. I tried to have a wide variety of assessment for learning. I wanted to introduce my students to a wide variety of workouts and how to use cross fit in their own lives. I also wanted them to be able to know a wide variety of workouts that target certain muscles. Using colored folders to organize each teams workout and agenda for the day was a great classroom management tip. I wanted each team to create their own dynamic warm-up. I had each team record their warm-up in ONE google sheet. Each team had their own tab and they had to put 6-8 workouts, why they are doing it, an image, and how many or how long they are doing each warm-up activity. I wanted students to see how easy it is to collaborate with Digital with Google Apps and putting them all in one sheet facilitates that need. It also lets me give feedback quicker and students can learn from each others post. It is mass chaos getting everyone in and you might be asking yourself won't students delete or mess up others work? Yes, plan on this, however, this is a great digital citizenship learning opportunity. I also wanted to teach them one of my new favorite Google Sheets features, "Insert Image" Next TimeI think next time I would like to have a culminating event. I had told my self I was going to have a Cross Fit games at lunch and make a ninja warrior course that the winning team from each class would compete in, but that did not happen. I had teams create their own 5 exercise workout routine, however, I would like each individual person to design their own workout that is aligned with their SMART goal they are working on. I think that would allow for more purpose and meaning in to their learning. STANDARDSI want to do a better job this year aligning what I do to the grade level outcomes(GLOs) and the national standards. Here are the standards I chose and I put them into I can messages:
I also had the students self assess before the and quiz and after I gave feedback. I am going to try to have the students self grade and have them own their grades. I have done this with my math classes but first time I will being doing this with Phys-Ed. Here is a sample of a students self grade sheet. Resources
