Why Use Tech?I think it was Kasey Bell who said "technology is not a solution but an opportunity". Technology is a tool, not only for me as a teacher, but for my students. I want them not just to consume tech in a positive way but create and collaborate with other students. We assume most students today are tech savvy, however, the truth is they are tech dependent. I think it is up to us as educators to teach students how to use tech in a positive way. I also come across many teachers who are afraid to use tech in their classroom for whatever reason. Fear of failure tends to keep us from trying new things. I have failed many times but I also say if you are going to fail, fail forward. Adam Llevo has a great quote that sums this up pretty nicely, "The best time to plant an oak tree is 20 years ago, the next best time is today". Now lets check out some of the tools I use (from failing forward) in my classroom: PERMANENT Display (Tv/Projector)MusicMusic is such a huge part of how I teach. I use it to for Engagement, Enhancing Lessons, and Classroom Management. Here are a few tips: 1) check the lyrics of what you use, 2) find music relevant to your students, 3) use themed music, 4) use instrumental versions, and my biggest suggestion is 5) use streaming music (I use Amazon music, which is free since I have Prime). I talked in more detail about how I use music in this post. Plickers/PlagnetsPlickers are a great low budget (free to use) cards with QR codes on them that allow your students to answer multiple choice questions. It allows for supper quick data on your students that you can use to give feedback to your students and analyze your teaching. Used for checks for understanding, exit tickets, self assessments, and setting goals. Plagnets are just plickers on a magnet. Used by sport coaches, PE teachers, professional athletes and dancers! Students love seeing themselves perform and make adjustments. RemindRemind allows teachers to send information via text, images, & voice to students and parents through any kind of device. I love the scheduling feature! It integrates with Google classroom, quizlet, quizzes, and much more. Quizlet LiveQuizlet Live is a free in-class game where students work in teams to learn study sets on Quizlet. Teams work together to correctly match the (twelve random) terms and definitions in a study set. The first team to match all of their terms and definitions wins!. This is my students favorite way to review key terms, diagrams, and practice test questions. QuizizzQuizizz allows you to conduct student-paced formative assessments in a fun and engaging way for students. It has a live and homework feature and it is totally free to use. the best feature is that there are millions of already made quizizz from other users that you can use. Google FormsGoogle Forms can be used for a wide variety of uses: assessments, provide feedback in surveys, enter fitness results, flipped lessons, and even differentiated instruction activities. Data is collected into a Google Sheet which can be used for simple analysis. One of my favorite features is providing feedback for incorrect AND correct responses. Google SlidesI use Google Slides as a teaching aid for Tabata and GIF Activities to Collaboration activities and Project Based Learning activities for students. I sometimes call Google Slides the Swiss Army Knife of G-Suite. There is so much you can do with it. Google SheetsGoogle Sheets is great for data management, I use it for my grade book and to make custom report cards, however, Sheets is great for collaboration activities with students. My favorite one I did was having all the students in ONE sheet to make a dynamic warm up for their group. I love the new Insert image feature. Students also use it to track their fitness data. Google ClassroomGoogle Classroom is not meant to be a learning management system, but I use it as my road map for all my students to get information. Not only can I make my class paperless, but this online platform helps students lead discussions, collaborate on group projects, as well as having a place to turn in assignments. It is also a great place to leave feedback. Keep conversations going even when class period ends. FlipityFlipity has SO many features I mostly use it for a random name picker and to make groups quickly. For my purposes I like Flipity over Team Shake. You can also use Flipity to make flashcards, quiz show, scavenger hunt, word search, tournament brackets, and even make certificates. Screncastify/Loom
